What the Audition Will Be Like

New Singers

You will be asked to vocalize and sight-read and to sing a short prepared piece (hymn, folksong, art song, etc.) If you wish to be accompanied, bring two copies.

Returning Singers

You will be asked to vocalize and sight-read and sing one or more short excerpts from works you performed this past season. Please bring your own marked copy. You are expected to sing not only the notes and rhythms, but the pronunciation, dynamics, articulation and cutoffs that we performed.

  1. Mozart “Requiem” Kyrie mm.33-end (81-end if you had G.Schirmer)
  2. Mendelssohn “And then shall your light” mm. 1-68

Master Chorale

You will be asked to vocalize, sing ascending and descending intervals, sing a prepared work (it does not need to be memorized), preferably a solo work in which you demonstrate your musicality, intonation, and expressivity. Simple and polished is preferable to weak and showy!

Opera Chorus

You will be asked to vocalize and sing a short, prepared song from memory. Bring at least one copy.

Please note: Opera chorus auditions are only held prior to the fall semester.

About the Chorale

treble clegThe Stockton Chorale is a mixed chorus composed of men and women aged 18 to 80. The group meets for rehearsals every Tuesday evening from the first Tuesday after Labor Day in September through concert and other activities in December. This constitutes the Fall "semester." Starting again the first Tuesday after New Year's Day, we begin the Spring semester rehearsals which last through the concert in May. The semester concludes with the Annual Business Meeting and Awards Banquet. This is the Chorale's yearly season cycle.

Weekly rehearsals begin at 7:00 pm and dismiss at 9:30 pm. The Chorale rehearses at St. John's Anglican Church in downtown Stockton, 316 N. El Dorado St.

Singers pay $80 per semester in dues and might be asked to purchase a score of a major work during the season. Singers are also required to supply their own performance "costume" – tuxedos (both red and black tie/cumberbun combos) for the men, and a specific two-piece dress available through the Chorale for the women.

There are various volunteer time projects, such as stage crew and mailing helpers, as well as committees that work on underwriting, fundraising events, selling tickets, and other means of keeping a non-profit organization like the Chorale going.

The Chorale is a great organization.
