Magen Solomon Interview
This past June, Magen Solomon, our new Artistic Director and Conductor, sat down with the Chorale's own Dave Sonner for an in-depth interview. The discussion ranged freely from topics related to her musical background and artistic philosophy to her vision for the Stockton Chorale. Check it out!
Visit the Artistic Director page to hear the chat.

Welcome and Introduction from Magen Solomon, Artistic Director and Conductor
Welcome and Welcome Back to the Stockton Chorale and Master Chorale! I am delighted and honored to have been chosen as your new Artistic Director and look forward to making music together – it’s going to be a wonderful year! Thank you to the Board, search committee, staff and current singers for welcoming me so warmly.
Our first step is to put together the best possible ensemble, and while we are relying heavily on returning singers to provide the backbone of this group, we enthusiastically encourage new and former singers to join us in continuing and enhancing the Stockton Chorale’s illustrious 59-year tradition.
Rehearsal Nights Have Changed
Stockton Chorale will rehearse on Tuesdays from 7-9:30 pm in the Guild Hall at St. John’s Anglican Church in Stockton, 316 N. El Dorado St., Stockton, beginning September 7.
Master Chorale will rehearse on Wednesdays from 7-8:30 pm in the Choir Room at Central United Methodist Church, 3700 Pacific Avenue, Stockton, beginning in mid- or late September. [Note: we may experiment with fewer, longer rehearsals.]
Another important change: We are adding a cookie break at both rehearsals!
Hearings and Audition Information
Current Singers: As promised, singers who participated in the 2009-10 season (and who wish to sing only in the Stockton Chorale) are not being required to audition. However, I would like to “hear” each current singer, so everyone needs to make an appointment so I can meet you and hear you sing! (Instructions below.)
Returning and New Singers for the Stockton Chorale, and anyone interested in the Master Chorale: The audition is 15 minutes long and painless; details are below. Everyone is encouraged to sign up for the earliest convenient time. You are likely in better vocal shape now than you’ll be in a month, you can cross it off your “to do list”, and you’ll be happier once it’s been taken care of! It will also help me hugely in planning the season.
To sign up for a time to meet, visit the hearings and auditions sign-up page:
http://stocktonchorale.org/members/hearings.php
Then select an open time slot, enter your name, telephone number and email address in the spaces provided, and click “Reserve this slot.” That’s it! (Folks who do not have access to a computer may call during office hours and ask the General Manager to make the reservation for you. Summer office hours are Tue-Wed-Thu 1pm-5pm.)

What the Audition/Hearing Will Be Like
- It will be 15 painless minutes and an opportunity for both of us to learn.
- The objective: I need to hear each singer individually in order to assess our current strengths and weaknesses, and to assist each singer in developing a specific, attainable goals to improve his/her singing. I will do my utmost to make this a positive experience.
- Please arrive at least ten minutes before your scheduled audition/hearing time, as there are two forms to fill out beforehand.
- Please also warm up before you arrive, so you can sing your best and most confident.
- Format: vocalizing, a little sight-reading, singing and identifying a few intervals, singing a song.
- Stockton Chorale Song: I want you to have the opportunity to really sing, a cappella, something that is familiar and comfortable for your voice and shows your musicality, like a carol, show tune, lullaby, silly or patriotic song, or something from this season. It does not need to be fancy!
- A few suggestions: Silent Night; O Come, All Ye Faithful; O Little Town of Bethlehem; O Say Can You See; America the Beautiful; Row, Row, Row Your Boat; Irene Goodnight; Michelle (Beatles); Somewhere over the Rainbow; etc.
- Master Chorale Song: A prepared piece (it does not need to be memorized). A solo song is preferred, but your part of a substantial choral work is also fine. The objective is to display the beauty of your voice, intonation, clarity of diction, musicality and expression. Simple and polished is much better than showy and uncertain. Please bring a second copy for me to play from (there will be no other accompanist).
Results
Letters will be sent in July to all who audition. Singers will be either accepted, waitlisted, or declined. All singers will be given suggestions for further developing their vocal and musical skills.
